Zululand Anthracite Colliery opens new wash plant in KwaZulu-Natal

Zululand Anthracite Colliery has opened its new wash plant located on the border of the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.

The new coal processing plant has a capacity of 50 tph and is expected to wash 3 Mt of discard in the next five years.

This reclamation of the long-standing discard dump will decrease the rehabilitation footprint of the colliery and produce 1 Mt of saleable product which will be made available for the export market.

The colliery is the sole producer of prime anthracite in South Africa.

In a ribbon cutting ceremony held at the new plant, His Majesty the King, Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, and Zululand Anthracite Colliery MD, Vuslat Bayoglu, together declared the wash plant open.

Those present heard speeches from a former employee of Zululand Anthracite Colliery, the current mayor of Ulundi, and the mayor of Zululand district municipality amongst others.

Finally, guests were addressed by His Majesty the King, who in his address said that Zululand Anthracite Colliery is an important business in Zululand and stated that it must be protected and supported by the community and workers.

The mine represents a R100 million investment in the area and employs 1 350 people.
